The mountain road from Bhimtal to Mukteshwar passes through pine forest and orchard country

Bhimtal to Mukteshwar is approximately 40 km by road and takes 1.5 hours of relaxed driving via Bhowali and Sitla. It's one of the more scenic short routes in Kumaon, climbing from 1,370 m at Bhimtal lake to 2,286 m at Mukteshwar through pine forest, fruit orchards, and small village markets. If you're in Bhimtal and considering a quieter day or two in the hills, Mukteshwar is the natural next stop.

    Quick reference

    • Distance: ~40 km
    • Drive time: 1.5 hours (1.75 hours in monsoon or peak weekend traffic)
    • Route: Bhimtal → Bhowali → Sitla → Mukteshwar
    • Altitude gain: ~900 m (Bhimtal 1,370 m → Mukteshwar 2,286 m)
    • Road quality: paved, two-lane, single-lane in places — good for any car
    • Taxi cost (one-way): ₹1,800–₹2,500 depending on car size

    The route in detail

From Bhimtal lake, drive east towards Bhowali on SH37 — about 10 km of moderate climb through pine and oak forest. Bhowali is the regional junction town and a useful stop for fuel, an early lunch at one of the dhabas, or to pick up fruit from the roadside Kumaon honey/jam stalls. From Bhowali, take the Bhowali–Mukteshwar road (also called the Mukteshwar Road) past Ramgarh, Dhanachuli junction, and Sitla village. The last 10 km from Sitla to Mukteshwar climbs steeply through orchard country and includes the iconic ridge-top approach.

    Scenic stops worth making

    • Ramgarh (Malla / Talla): known as "the fruit bowl of Kumaon" — peach, plum, and apple orchards. April–June is bloom season; August onwards is harvest. The roadside Tagore Top viewpoint (Rabindranath Tagore once stayed here) is a 5-minute detour.
    • Sitla village: 4 km before Mukteshwar. A small viewpoint cluster with views of Nanda Devi on clear mornings. Several boutique cafés have opened here in the last two years.
    • Bhowali fruit market: if you're driving back the same day, stop here on the return for fresh jams, pickles, and honey — better prices than Mukteshwar village.

Should you combine Bhimtal and Mukteshwar in one trip?

Yes, but only if you have at least 4 nights total. Bhimtal is a lake town — boat rides, lake walks, dense vegetation. Mukteshwar is a ridge-top village — Himalayan views, forest walks, snowfall in winter. The two genuinely complement each other but the 1.5-hour drive between them is meaningful, so don't try to "day-trip" it both ways. A common pattern guests describe: 2 nights at a Bhimtal lakefront stay, then move to Mukteshwar for the second half of the trip for the higher-altitude views. Practical drive tips

    • Best time of day: leave Bhimtal by 10–11 AM. Earlier than that on a weekend means hitting tourist convoy traffic between Bhowali and Bhimtal. Later than 4 PM means you're driving the last stretch in fading light.
    • Motion sickness: the road has continuous switchbacks for the last 25 km. Travellers prone to motion sickness should pre-medicate at Bhowali, sit in the front, and avoid heavy meals on the way up.
    • Fuel: Bhowali has the only reliable petrol pump on the route. Top up before continuing.
    • Network coverage: Airtel works reliably throughout. Jio is patchy past Sitla. If you're using Maps for navigation, download the offline area first.
    • Self-drive vs taxi: the road is easy enough for any sedan. Taxi makes sense if you don't want to drive Bhowali's switchbacks or if you're combining the trip with onward travel.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Bhimtal to Mukteshwar?

No direct bus. Take a shared jeep or taxi from Bhimtal to Bhowali (₹50–₹100 shared), then change for a Mukteshwar-bound jeep at Bhowali stand. Most travellers prefer a private taxi end-to-end (~₹2,000–₹2,500).

Can I do a day trip from Bhimtal to Mukteshwar and back?

Yes. Leaving Bhimtal at 10 AM gets you to Mukteshwar by 11:30, with time for the temple, Chauli Ki Jali, and lunch before driving back by 4 PM. Tight but workable. An overnight stay is the better experience.

Is the Bhimtal–Mukteshwar road open in winter?

Yes — it stays open year-round. After heavy snowfall (rare, 2–3 events in January–February typically) the road may be temporarily slippery for 24 hours. Local authorities clear it quickly. Carry chains only if a major snowfall is forecast.

Which is better — Bhimtal or Mukteshwar?

Different things. Bhimtal is for lake activities and a town vibe; Mukteshwar is for quiet, forest walks, and bigger Himalayan views. They genuinely complement each other; if you have 4+ nights, do both.
